Last Day

Today's the day!!!  My last day of work!!

AAAHHHHHHHH!!

Someone pinch me!!  It seems so surreal and I'm sure I won't notice that much at first.  It helps that I'm not actually leaving forever and I'll still be connected as a consultant.  I just won't really be back in the office and I'll only be interacting with a few people.

Here's what my desk looks like now...just a few more things to take home and a bit of dusk to clean up.

See that pink cup?  My sister bought that for me the first year I started here.  It's a hoops & yo-yo cup and it was hilarious.  It doesn't work anymore, but it gave me many laughs.

I'm so excited about nursing school and this new chapter in my life.  I've had a lot of "chapters" and they have all been great experiences, so I'm sure this one will be too.  I already have homework - chapters to read before the first day of class.  Fun times, right!?

Thanks for sharing this journey with me and being there through work, pre-reqs, applications, and decisions!!!  I promise I won't turn all my posts into complaining sessions about how much school I have....

Have a great Friday and a fabulous 3-day weekend!!!

Feeling Special and our Favorite Thing

I love how some days I have absolutely nothing to say and then other days I am full to the brim of experiences to share.  Today is one of those days where I am full to the brim of really random things, but all things that happened since the last time we chatted.

First, let's talk about how I was too tired to do my PiYo workout this morning.  I'm not even sure it was tired, I just felt a bit burnt out.  So I didn't do it.  I kind of knew I wasn't going to do it yesterday night because I just felt to exhausted.  And not physically exhausted, more mentally exhausted.  And that can be just as bad - if not worse.  I figure I can do it tonight if I want to or I can do it tomorrow (since Fridays are rest days).  We'll see.  I don't think I'm giving up by any means, I just wanted a day off from the 4:15am wake-up call and the double days of PiYo and running.  I think I'll still run this afternoon, but we'll see how I feel.  I really wasn't feeling my run yesterday before I left, but then I felt really good on the run and thought about lots of things and worked other things out in my head, so I was really glad I went.

In other news, I had my goodbye party at work and it was AWESOME!!!  They worked so hard on it and it was so fabulous.  They made me this Good Luck bulletin:

Isn't it fabulous!!  The little skeleton is saying "Kattrina calls the shots" and those are all pictures of me with a nursing hat on.  The cake was amazing too - it was lemon cream.  And my co-worker put the prescription meds on the cake (M&Ms).  Those little pieces of paper are for people to write me a "prescriptions" for school and the future.  The notes were so sweet that I actually shed some tears.  I really love my co-workers - they not only do amazing work every day, but they are truly amazing people.  My one co-worker made me a condom necklace (since I work in HIV prevention):

Complete with a female condom that matches my shirt.  Of course, none of these condoms are usable, since they all had holes punched into them!  The room was decorated with nursing stuff (like a kid's medical kit!) and condom streamers.  And there was also a slide show of a bunch of photos of me over the years - 7 years - from numerous events, trainings, and staff fun.  Here's a picture of me from our 2008 Award Ceremony with my good friend from high school (she didn't work with me, she just came to hang out).

And here is our 2008 Wine Tasting, with the same friend from high school and another good friend from Peace Corps.

I would show you other photos but a lot of the people in the photos are related to work and I don't have photo releases for them.  But here are some of my adorable co-workers from the party!

I'm gonna miss them all so much!!!  In addition to the wonderful party (it was an Italian potluck - think pasta, chicken parm, meatballs, bread, salad, cookies, Bundt cake, and other yumminess), they also gave me a HUGE gift card to Amazon.com so I could buy some nursing supplies and books and other odds and ends.  It was so generous and helped out so much.  Yes, I already spent every last penny.  I bought two pairs of scrubs, two undershirts, a pair of nursing shoes, a stethoscope, three books, and a filing cabinet (not really school related but I really need something to keep my files, loan documents, work documents, etc. organized - right now they are in piles in the kitchen).  It felt so great to buy it though, now I'm almost ready for school.  I ordered this backpack:

I couldn't decide if the pink color made it look childish, but I really like it and didn't want the obligatory black/gray/blue backpack.  So, pink it is!

So, that was my party.  I hope everyone has the chance to work at a place as great as my current job.  Obviously, I did my fair share of complaining, but even when I complained, I knew how lucky I was.  The party really made me feel special and like I had made a real contribution to the organization and the community we serve.  Oh, and I bought my boss/supervisor a gift too:

It's a tie with microscopic images of the HIV virus (gold and silver circles)!  I loved it and was so excited to give it to him!!  I think he was really surprised and said he was planning on wearing it to a wedding he's going to in September.  I told him it is a conversation starter and that he can use it to bring up HIV prevention whenever he's out at events - and he can be reminded of me and the six years we spent working on HIV prevention together.  It was a bit pricey and I was hesitant to buy it at first, but I'm SO glad I got it because it was nice to give something back.

Ok - enough party talk!

Yesterday I met a friend and her daughter at the nature center and we went and threw rocks into the river again!

This time I put Evan in his bathing suit and shoes that dried easily.  He was really excited to go and hang out and hike again.  It took him a while to warm up because my friend and her daughter were with us and he gets all weird when we hang out with other people that he doesn't know that well (although we hang out with them a LOT).

We spent about an hour and half there - walking in the water, throwing rocks, hiking, picking up sticks, picking up rocks, jumping on stumps, etc.  I'm gonna be really sad once summer and the warm weather is gone.  I'm not quite ready to spend six months inside again.  Plus, Evan is still in 18 month clothes and all his winter clothes are size 2T!

And a fun Throwback Thursday pic from 2002 (I think!):

One year for Christmas my father bought me a week long trip to Costa Rica for a yoga retreat.  The girl with me was the yoga instructor - my Dad and I always went to her studio in DC when I was in college and she ran the retreat in Costa Rica.  It was SO fun!!  We did so much yoga but also got to go zip lining, white water rafting, and a lot of fun other things.  This year she's leading a yoga retreat in Italy!!!  Hint hint Dad....haha!

Do you like your job?  What is the best thing about it?

Have you ever gone on a yoga retreat?  What's your favorite yoga pose??

Life is always switching things up on you

Do you ever feel like right when you have things figured out, life takes a U-turn and everything you figured out goes down the drain and you have to start over?  I swear that is what always happens to me.  I have spent so many months trying to figure out transportation to and from school and how my husband and I are going to survive on one car, etc.  and then when I have a tentative plan in place everything changes.

First, because my husband worked overtime during the winter his company decided to cut his hours down to 20 a week for eight weeks.  Seriously, I think that would stress most people out.  So then we were scrambling to figure out how to make ends meet when in three weeks my salary was going to be cut by 2/3rds.  And then, out of the blue, his old boss who now works at a private golf course calls him up and offers him 16 hours at his course to make up the hours he's losing.  I was pleasantly shocked that his old boss would be willing to do that and that he would shift things around so that my husband could still get his regular hours for the most part.  The catch though?  His old boss's golf course is 45 minutes away and he has to start at 6am.  Not that big a deal except that now we have to drop Evan off at my sister's at 5am.  I can tell you she is none too pleased.  She at least didn't flat out refuse but no one likes to be up that early...this I know because I am up earlier than that and it is no fun.  And then who knows when school starts...how we are going to get everything to work out.  I really just wish there was someone who was completely devoted to helping me out...who would out of the blue just offer to watch Evan in the mornings at 5am or come pick Evan and me up and give us a ride or things like that.  Someone who wouldn't make me feel guilty and who would totally understand that we have no other options and we are just trying to make ends meet...not trying to inconvenience everyone in the world.  Of course there is really no person like that because even very compassionate, loving, amazing people have their own lives and get inconvenienced at times...but still, it would be nice.

Ugg.  I can only handle so much stress and problem solving and I am about up to my ears.

Aside from that I got the pleasurable experience of trying to sign up for the Marketplaces (Affordable Care Act) yesterday.  It wasn't completely miserable, but it wasn't pleasant either.  The lady on the other side of the phone really just wanted to do something else because every time she asked for a document that I didn't have in front of me she would give me my reference number and tell me I could call her back.  I was determined to finish it all except that I couldn't find Ivan's green card number fast enough so I do have to call her back.  Not the end of the world except that if I want insurance coverage starting 1 Sept I have to fill out the paperwork by 15 August...which is tomorrow. I am hoping I get a chance to do it today or tomorrow otherwise we'll be out of luck.

Ok, that's all I have to report.  No pictures, no great stories, just complaints....

But let me leave you with a picture of Evan because I don't want you to end this reading session feeling down and depressed!

My last work trip and a PR

I've been gone for a while and I have so much to tell you.  I still haven't even posted about my last day in Vermont, which I still want to do.  Maybe you aren't that interested but I want the memory written down.  However, today I am going to give you a quick recap of my trip to Los Angeles, which is where I was for the past week-ish.

But first, my exciting PR news.

Yesterday I ran a neighborhood 5k.  I'd been doing some speed work and signed up for this race specifically to see whether I could improve my speed.  My previous PR had been 23:49 back when I was 21 years old and I was hoping to beat that.  And I did!!!  Not by much, but my new PR is 23:46 - a whole 3 seconds faster.  However, I am definitely NOT 21 anymore so I was excited that I actually got a new PR.  I came in 19th place overall (out of 376 people) and 3rd place for my age group.  Excitement people!

And now, a quick recap of my trip to LA.

Every year I organize HIV testing for a big national conference.  This year the conference was in Los Angeles so my co-worker and I headed out there.  With Evan (because he hasn't missed a work trip yet) and my Aunt Pam (who was nice enough to come hang out with Evan while I was working).

This conference is huge and stressful and I am pretty much stressed from May until I get back into the office and have paid all of the bills and our boxes are returned.  The thing about this event is something, or many things, always goes wrong.  It's a huge exercise in problem solving.  This year was no different.  All kinds of crazy things went wrong, but luckily it was a huge success on the outside.  No one but us knew the internal drama and disasters that were going on behind the scenes.

I'm not going to describe them all because I am sure my work is not the most interesting thing to read about, but I will describe one.  Like how we brought in a mobile testing unit this year and the unit ran on a diesel generator and we couldn't run it inside the convention center.  That meant that our entire testing unit had to be run on the battery...the lights, the refrigerator that held the tests, etc.,  and there was no air conditioner so the temperature kept rising and the tests become unstable in temps higher than 86 degrees.  Nice.  So we ended up having to run to an auto parts store, buy a 12-volt battery, and plug it into the wall.  This actually didn't solve the problem because it still wasn't enough power and although the fridge was working, we could only turn the lights on in one testing room.  Ahhh!!  These are some of the problems I dealt with.  Fun stuff.  It made for a very long trip with anxiety as to what disaster we were gong to be faced with each day.

However, we did squeeze in a bit of fun.  My aunt and I made it out to the Santa Monica beach!

As you can see - I made another tragic weather assumption.  I thought Los Angeles was going to be HOT so I brought a bunch of shorts and t-shirts for Evan and me.  Nope.  It was chilly.  Evan had to wear my sweater when we went to the beach because it was so chilly.  Next time we go anywhere I'm just going to bring a bunch of sweaters and pants no matter what the temperature is supposed to be because I sure can't seem to figure it out!

We walked along the promenade (I think that is what they called it).  The houses right on the beach were beautiful. I was wishing I could go for a run along the promenade, but obviously that was not going to happen!  Plus it was downright cold so I would have wanted long pants and a long sleeved shirt, which of course I didn't bring.

And the pier was fun too.  A bit crowded for me, but it was fun people-watching for a while.

We walked around long enough to see the sunset, which was beautiful.

I think this was the first time I'd seen the sunset over the beach.  On the east coast we usually have to get up really early to watch the sunrise, but never the sunset.  It was beautiful.  Actually, I changed my mind.  I think I've seen the sunset on the Pacific coast when I was in Acapulco like ten years ago.  But usually I think of sunrises on the beach and not sunsets.  Both are equally stunning and beautiful.  And really, can you see those people in the water??!!  It was freezing out!!

That night we ate at Seasons 52.  I had never heard of it, although I guess there is one in northern Virginia (and I just looked at the website and one is opening near me soon).  The name means something like 4 seasons (they have a different menu each season) and 52 weeks in a year.  And everything on the menu is less than 475 calories - however, that doesn't mean you can't order an appetizer for 475 calories and then a meal for 475 calories, and then a dessert for 475 calories.  I got the Summer Vegetarian Tasting which was sooooo good.  It had a quinoa-citrus salad, soft taco, seasonal vegetables, and cedar-roasted tofu with a tropical salsa.  It was delicious.  Evan got the kiddie flat bread pizza and LOVED it.  He loves pizza these days.  I try to make it at home with whole wheat pita so that it is a bit healthier than Papa Johns.

The rest of the trip was pretty much taken up with work, work, work, and dinner.  We ate at the Yard House twice (both times I got the 5oz burger - for some reason I was really craving burgers), George's Greek Grill, The Farm of Beverly Hills,(for breakfast and dinner), and The Original Pantry Cafe (a historic cafe that's been open since 1924 - and actually opened since that day, it's never closed because it's 24/7 and they say they've been opened and had a least one customer since then).  I'm not sure why I think you're interested in where we ate every day, but I guess since all I did was eat and work, I figured I'd share.  If you are ever in downtown LA, these were all good restuarants.

We stayed at the JW Marriott LA Live, which was right next to the Staples Center.  Lady Gaga played there the last night we were there.  It was VERY interesting to see what people were wearing (or not wearing...lots of skin showing) to the concert.

The hotel was beautiful and Evan loved hanging out by the window looking at the pool.

Luckily my aunt was nice enough to take him to the pool a few times.  He LOVES the pool and literally spent hours looking at it from our room and saying "agua" over and over again.  It was adorable, until the 900th time.

At the conference I got the pleasure of meeting Dora and her new friends, Kate and Pablo.

I wrote a little sign for my niece that said, "Good luck in kindergarten Peyton, Love Dora" and I was SOOOO excited to show her the photo.  She starts kindergarten this year and I thought that she'd be really excited to get this little picture from Dora.  I posted it on Facebook and my sister said she was really excited.

The only other experience was the 5 hour non-stop flight with Evan, by myself.  Evan's come on all my work trips so I am used to traveling with him alone.  However, before this trip, the longest we'd been cramped on a plane was 4 hours.  Not that an hour is that much more, but in toddler hours - it is FOREVER.  Plus, the plane was completely full so there was no space.  Evan and I were jammed into one seat by the window.  Surprisingly, he was an angel both there and back.

That's not a very flattering photo of either of us, but it was hard to get one.  He was so good on the way there that TWO people complimented me on how well-behaved he was.  Now, I did come prepared with books, toys, one or two iPad apps (he is not allowed on the iPad anymore due to a few breakdowns when I took the iPad away from him...it was great for the plane and for the trip, but definitely not ready for an iPad-addicted toddler), and lots of patience.  I really think the key was staying calm myself and pretending we were at home and not on a small, confined plane with a large audience.  The way back he slept for 2/3 of the flight (amazing) and so that was a small blessing.  I still nurse him on take-off and landing (even when we are jammed super close to our seatmates and it's a bit uncomfortable), so that works like a charm.  And it calms him down when he starts getting antsy, which is nice.

So, that was my trip.  I got back on Tuesday night but I took the rest of the week off because my sister was out of town and so we didn't have any daycare.  And plus, we needed all that time to readjust to East Coast time!  We just hung around, met up with friends, and played.

4 Kids and an Aquarium

Friday was a great day.  I can't remember why now, but I remember thinking that it was a great day.  At work I had helped to organize a Thunderclap for National HIV Testing Day and we needed 100 supporters in order to "release" it.  You would think that would be fairly easy, but no, it wasn't. I think it was a new concept and people were nervousness or something.  And then people are apathetic and like to ignore you.  I posted it on my Facebook page numerous time pleading with friends and family to sign up and I got three friends to sign on.  That's it.  I have hundreds of friends and lots of family members on Facebook and I got three people to help me out.  There was no cost to it...you just had to agree to have an HIV prevention message posted on your wall at the exact same time as everyone else who signed up.  I really thought I might get a few more people, especially when I was pleading and desperate sounding.  But no.  Everyone ignored me.

I think I got off track because that paragraph above is very negative sounding and I started out saying that I had an amazing Friday.  After a few personal phone calls I finally got 100 supporters and the message went out!! That was really exciting.  We also had a success at the car shop.  I took my car in for an oil change and its 60,000 mile check-up - scary stuff.  Since the life of the car, we've never walked out of the car shop for less than $600 (even when it should be cheap there are things wrong, like I backed into a snow bank and ruined some tire thing that costs a lot of money).  This time we only owed $300!!!  It felt amazing!!  Yeah - I realize that $300 is still a ton of money and I really shouldn't be celebrating, but when you are expecting $600-$1200 and it's only half of that, you get really excited.

Then that evening I went on a short three mile run (while Evan slept) before heading over to a friend's house for a BBQ.  Yum!!  I love BBQing.  They have a daughter Evan's age but Evan is too shy and won't play with her.  It's possible we were two hours late for the BBQ because I underestimated how long I thought it would take me to run and shower, but oh well.  I was really happy that I got a run in when I was swamped at work and then had the BBQ a short time later.

Saturday was filled with lots of exercise.  I went on a 9 mile run/walk with TNT.  I didn't have golf because it's an in-between week so I met up with friends and did a long run.  Everyone else was doing ten miles but I had to run 2 miles there and 2 miles home so I just did five with the group.  And we walked up most hills.  Evan is getting heavy in his stroller so it is a lot of work running with him and my friend wanted to walk the hills so who was I to argue???  We stopped at the playground on our way home so that was fun.  It was completely empty so that's a plus.  Evan had a blast in the sand box.   I used to hate those things because I thought they were disgusting but now I don't really care.

After the park we went home, showered, and headed to the pool.  Yeah...right during nap time.  Evan slept the entire time at the pool and didn't want to play in the water.  He snuggle up next to me and promptly fell asleep while I was sitting in the water.  Very adorable.  That night Ivan decided that he wanted to go on a family bike rike - completely ignoring the fact that I had already run 9 miles.  I agreed anyway.  We rode our bikes around the neighborhood and to the park so Evan could play.  He loves the bikes and I do too...even more so when I am not already exhausted from my run in the morning....

And Sunday was a crazy day.  It started out with chocolate chip, banana, strawberry pancakes.  And some maple syrup.

Look what happens when you give a toddle maple syrup.  First, he glows (haha - not sure why the photo turned out so weird)!!  And then he stops dipping his pancake in the syrup and just licks it straight from the plate.  He was in sugar heaven.  This boy loves his maple syrup.

Then we took all the nieces to the Aquarium.

Yup - Ivan and me and four kids all 5 and under and a huge, crowded aquarium.  We had a blast though.  Or at least I did.  Ivan had to carry Evan and the heavy diaper bag the entire time and started complaining about his back hurting, so he was not as patient towards the end of the visit as he could have been.  And I got a bit impatient with the girls when they were trying to pick out their items from the gift shop - but mainly because I knew that Ivan was annoyed.  But all in all, I thought it was so much fun.

When we got home my sister and her husband were still at the movies so we made grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch and played outside.

Evan loves this play structure.  And his shorts are so short because we have to roll the waist band or else they fall off.  He's just a skinny-minny.

So that was my busy, fun weekend.  How about you?

Real maple syrup or the fake stuff?

Sandboxes - yes or no?

My Old Stomping Ground

This past week I headed back to Atlanta - my home for the two years I was in grad school.  I remember when I was trying to decide where to go for grad school and I was nervous about heading so far south and to a place completely unknown to me.  However, Atlanta turned out to be a great city and I loved everything about it.  I don't love it enough to move there for the rest of my life, but it was, and is, a fabulous city.

Evan and I headed there for a work trip (probably my last work trip to Atlanta ever) and so the first few days were spent in grantee meetings.  My wonderful mother was able to make the trip to Atlanta this time and take care of Evan (thanks Mom!!!), which was awesome because I pretty much spent the first couple days in meetings.  The meetings started at 8am and ended around 5pm and then we had evening events that went from 5:30pm-9pm.  Yup - long, long days.  I stopped in around lunch to eat with my mom and nurse Evan to sleep and then I banana split again.  Since I've been on the same grant since it started and everyone remembers when I was pregnant and I've brought Evan on every work trip - people were very excited to see him again.

Evan was an angel and behaved perfectly for my mom.

They got to spend so much time together and did lots of exciting things: hanging out at the pool, kicking pine cones in abandoned parking lots, walking around the hotel property numerous times, playing the "dancing farmer" app, and putting stickers all over the hotel room.

Evan loved the pool and kept pointing outside and saying "agua" numerous times a day.  I think a ton of pool days are in our future.  Like all photos, he looks like he's a bit iffy about the entire situation, but really he just isn't into smiling for the camera.

After the work meeting, I stayed a few extra days to see some Atlanta friends.  I stayed the remaining nights with my Peace Corps friend Sarah (for some reason we didn't take any pictures).  Fun fact: she married a Honduran also!  She is now pregnant with her first child (a little boy) and is due in November.  We moved from the hotel to her house on Friday and then headed over to my old roommate's house to see her and her three kids.  I hadn't seen them in about 4 years so it was nice to catch up.

Back at Sarah's house we had a traditional Honduran meal: Pollo Campero!  Ok, so Pollo Campero is actually a Guatemalan chain, but it was all over Honduras too and it's pretty yummy fried chicken.  It was fun eating it and remembering all our Honduran times.  Sarah used to live in the city near my town and when I'd go into the city I'd often hang out with her and sometimes spend the night at her place.  When I first moved to my town she was the person who really helped me adjust to life in Honduras and showed me around the city.  She was starting her third year when I started my first so she left about 10 months after I got there, but we had a lot of great times together.

My mom left the next morning so Evan and I took her to the airport.

Evan was very sad to see her go.  I don't pay attention to him nearly as much as his Mimi does!

Here we all are together.  I'm not sure what is going on with my leg there, but oh well.  And I swear this outfit looked better when I looked in the mirror than it does on camera...but again, oh well.  It was so much fun seeing my mom and watching Evan and her bond.  After she left he kept saying "Bye Mimi" all day.  And when I'd say "Te amo Evan" he'd respond "Te amo Mimi" rather than "Te amo Mami".  I realize that Mimi and Mami are very similar so he's probably just confused, but I thought it was cute.

After dropping my mom off Evan and I headed to my friend Kelly's house.  I met her in grad school and then she moved to the DC area and then recently just moved back to Atlanta.  From her house we walked to downtown Decatur where we were going to meet another friend Nancy for lunch.  We got there early so played at a very awesome playground for about 40 minutes.  This playground not only had playground equipment, but people also donated a ton of old toys so it also had trucks, cars, fun riding things, those plastic play equipment things, kitchens, etc.  Evan LOVED it and didn't even really go on the playground stuff - he mostly pushed around plastic lawn mowers, road cars, and went in and out of plastic houses.  He was in playground heaven.

When our other friend arrived with her three kids we headed to farm burger for lunch.  It was a bit  crazy because I had Evan, Kelly had her son (two months older than Evan), and Nancy had her three kids (two boys aged 6 and 4 and a girl aged 10 months).  It made for a constantly moving meal, but we still managed to catch up and talk a bit.  After lunch we headed back to the playground for a while and then Kelly and I walked back to her house.  Evan fell asleep on the way so Kelly and I got some quiet time to catch up before she brought me back to Sarah's house (Sarah was working on Saturday - which is why we didn't hang out).

Sunday we slept in a bit and then headed to the Renaissance Festival.  I really lucked out because I didn't have a ticket and just as I was heading over to buy one (for $20), a nice family asked if I needed a ticket and handed me their extra one.  What a blessing!  We really just walked around the festival, ate some food, played some games, and people-watched (very entertaining since so many people dress up).  It was a fun day.  Then we headed home, packed up our suitcases, and made our way to the airport.  Our flight was delayed 1.5 hours so Evan and I entertained ourselves for about three hours (since I like to arrive a bit early when I'm traveling with Evan) before getting on a completely packed flight.

Yesterday I took the day off to catch up, unpack our suitcase, wash some clothes, go to the grocery store, and rest a bit.  Evan found his bird while I was unpacking and it made him think of Mimi.

My mom made this bird for him (and one for herself too) and they play with their birds when they Skype.  This is one way they play - they put the birds in their mouth and then shake their heads around.  So, when Evan sees his bird, he usually does this and wants to talk to Mimi on Skype.  It's adorable.

So, that was my long week/weekend!  What have you been up to since I've been gone???

16 April 2014

Slides and Tears

I am working from home all week so it's been difficult to find time to blog.  I don't have a 1.5 hour bus ride in the morning, so my routine has been thrown off schedule.  For two weeks in April every year Evan's daycare is closed and I have to find someone else to watch Evan or take vacation.  Last year it worked out well because I had a work trip to Birmingham and my aunt meet me there and watched Evan for a week and I was able to shuffle him around between friends for the other days.  This year, not so much.  I've taken a lot more work trips and both my aunt and my sister have already done (or are signed up for) two trips, so I didn't want them to ask for another favor.  So, I found another daycare to bring him to for a week and then I'm taking a week of vacation.

The daycare was recommended by a friend of mine and we went over to visit and the woman seemed nice.  Evan has other thoughts though.  The first day he was ok and I snuck off when he was outside playing.  Yesterday he was a bit more clingy but I snuck off while he was chasing after a ball.  Today?  He refused to be fooled and grabbed a hold of my hair and hung on for dear life.  The woman took him so I could leave and Evan screamed bloody murder.  It was very painful.  I thought that each day would get better but it seems that each day is worse.  Now that he knows I'm going to drop him off and leave he gets all panicky when we get there.  I really hate it.  It took all my self control to not burst into tears and drag my little baby toddler back home with me.  I think we avoid this situation normally because my husband usually drops him off and he tends to be less clingy with his dad.  Plus, I think he was familiar with my sister when we started dropping him off there so he's never cried at all (and maybe she smells like me or something so it's not quite as scary).  Boo.  It makes me sad.  And I miss him 10x more when he's at this new place than when he's at my sister's.  Just one more day and then our vacation starts and I can make it up to him by spending every second with him for the next week.

We did have a good weekend though.  It was SO beautiful out that I wanted to spend every second outside.  And so did Evan.  He has even learned a new word: slide.  That is a clear indication of how much time we spent at the park.

He had a new love of slides and can go down all by himself (if it's not too steep).  Sometimes he'll just perch on the top and enjoy the view though!

This was the perfect slide for him because he could get to the top and slide down all by himself.  Then he found the other park for the older kids and decided he liked the steep slide too.

This slide was much steeper and he had problems getting on it.  I usually caught him half way down and would have to reposition him - he would be head first, on his back, on his belly, etc.  Luckily the park wasn't really crowded so he had time to explore without fear of being knocked over.

He has also now developed a "smile" face, which is weird because I don't usually make him smile when I take photos and I don't feel like I take a TON of photos of him.  But somehow he learned and now sticks his head out and makes a goofy face.  Here are some others.

He likes to get as close to the camera as possible (and yes, I realize he needs a haircut).

Here he was eating his Sunday breakfast of pancakes dipped in maple syrup (although he didn't eat the pancakes, just sucked the syrup off of them), eggs, and sausage.  He is a sausage fiend and gobbles it up first.

Alright, I have to banana split and get this posted so I can get some work done.  I am a bit exhausted because I was up until after midnight getting work done and then had to get up early this morning to get Evan to daycare.  Since we only have one car I've been running (literally) Evan to daycare in the morning.   It's a nice and easy way to get a 4 mile run in, but today it was only 31 degrees out!  I had to dig my winter running clothes out again.

I hope you have a good Wednesday!!

Morning blues

Good morning!  At least I hope it is.  I feel extra awake this morning, probably because I slept an extra 40 minutes.  Whoops!  My alarm went off and I talked myself into cuddling with Evan for a few more minutes and the next time I looked at the clock it was 40 minutes later.  So much for doing my hair.  I am trying my best to blow dry it out but that has only happened one time this week.  I am determined to do better.  And last night I got to bed early, so that makes no sense.  My alarm said I had a full 6 hours and 6 minutes before the alarm went off, I don't remember the last time it said 6 hours.  Apparently that doesn't matter, come 4:30am I still don't want to get up.  Wanna know who else doesn't want to get up?

Maple Baby.  He is never thrilled when I turn the lights on to wake him up.  He woke up this morning when Ivan woke up so then I had to carry him around while putting our bags together.  We have lots of bags that I have to organize and put together - three lunch bags, a pump bag (for me to take to work), and a milk bag (for Evan to take to Aunt Melissa's).  I am running out of lunch ideas and probably need to visit Pinterest.  I feel like I put the same thing in there each day.  And for myself, I actually do.  A peanut butter and jelly sandwich, carrot sticks, hummus, cheese, and an apple.  Not very exciting.  Evan got eggs and rice for breakfast, homemade Mac and cheese and yogurt with blueberries for lunch, and crackers for a snack.  Yeah, my creativity is really lacking.

This morning Evan clung to my little neck, probably wishing he could go back to bed.  At least he usually does sleep a few hours more at my sister's house, so it's not the worst situation.  Next week we have to bring him to a different daycare and I am totally dreading it...I think he will cry every day when I leave him there.  Poor guy.  I hope he doesn't.

I am wearing my new Stitch Fix shirt today.  So far I like the look of it.  I am still pleased that I purchased it.  I am also hoping to get a run in today. On Saturday my running friends and I agreed to do some trail running on the weekends and some track workouts during the week.  I am excited!  The weekend trail running may be difficult because Ivan has to work on Sundays and I have to work on Saturdays but we'll see how it goes.  And we'll see if we actually do go.  It's hard to find time these days to do any running, but maybe it'll work out.

I think I will banana split, I don't have much else to say and don't want to bore you.  I am a bit overwhelmed at work with Interim Progress Reprts, Quarterly Reports, and grant writing - all during the  month I have to take a week of vacation and decide about nursing school (aka the rest of my life). My mind is going a mile a minute.

Do you like trail running?

Do you pack a lunch or buy a lunch?

What's a big decision you have to make this month?

Trip to Houston

The entire reason I flew to Houston was so that I could attend a conference.  The conference was the National Conference on LGBT (Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, and a Transgender) Equality and was called Creating Change.  The main reason I went was because I was presenting a workshop, but I found it to be an amazing conference for many reasons.

First, they had free, on site daycare from 8:30am-6:30pm.  Seriously!?  This was awesome.  I have never been to a conference or meeting where daycare was provided, especially free daycare.  I only needed it one day because my sister drove over to Houston to watch Evan the other days, but if they hadn't had it I wouldn't have been able to go to the daylong institute before she arrived.  I think all conferences should have that option!

Second, the conference was so inclusive of everyone.  Along with "scent-free" areas, the also had gender-neutral bathrooms.

If you zoom in, you can see why gender-neutral bathrooms are important.  I thought it was great and even better that we were at a the Hilton and they were willing to turn their bathrooms into gender-neutral ones.  And it didn't even feel different seeing guys in the same bathroom.

At an awesome conference you are bound to see awesome people!  I ran into a good friend of mine and got to spend some quality time with her.  The last time I saw her was at the International AIDS Conference in July 2012, when I was 8 months pregnant.

This is definitely not a stellar photo of me, but at least we are wearing coordinating outfits....  I met her about four or five years ago when I trained her on an HIV intervention in Columbia, SC (not where either of us are from though).  She liked to run and we went on a few runs together, and you know how running really solidifies friendships. {And let's not talk about how I haven't run in two weeks and my half marathon is two short weeks away.}.  It was so fun hanging out with her and catching up!  And I have to mention that even people I didn't know we're super nice.  People came up to me and introduced themselves and were genuinely nice and warm.  It was such a positive environment.  I loved it!  And Laverne  Cox was there, from Orange is the New Black and she gave an amazing speech at the Opening Plenary.

The Plenary on Saturday was on HIV/AIDS and it was really good.  There was a guy illustrating the points being made through a drawing and it was the coolest thing ever.  He did two sheets and I only got a photo of one, but look at this amazingness!

I just couldn't believe he could capture what they were saying and simultaneously design and draw this cartoonish interpretation.  Skills people.

Evan had a great time too.  He got to hang out with my sister and go to the beach and  tour the USS Texas, a battleship that was in WWI and WWII.  Plus he hung around and was spoiled by his aunt, which is always nice.  When he is older I would love to take him to conference sessions, but not at 17 months.

So, that was my trip.  On Saturday afternoon we headed to Dallas to stay with my sister for two nights and that was a lot of fun.  On Sunday we even put a movie on and drank hot chocolate.  Fabulous.  I don't even remember the last time I did that.  Evan was napping in my arms, but it still felt good to not have anything pressing to do and to just be able to relax and veg on the couch.  That night we headed to my sister's friend's house to watch the Super Bowl.  I didn't get a lot of football watching in, but Evan did a lot of venison sausage eating.  It cracks me up what Evan likes and dislikes.  I'm not sure that I would have put venison on the "for sure" list if I hadn't witnessed his chowing down myself.

Upon my return my good mood was completely hampered by my old landlord and the fact that he shorted me some of my deposit money.  And you want to know what his reason was??  I didn't give him 30 days notice.  HELLO, he asked ME to move out and gave me six weeks to find a new place...and then he turns around and says I left without giving proper notice.  Haha.  It is so stupid it's funny.  But then it's not because it made me so mad.  I really hope karma nips him in the butt, and not even nips...bites really hard.  I am secretly thrilled knowing his electricity bill this month is probably close to $500.  I guess that's karma in a way...that he's stuck in the condo he didn't feel important enought to care about.

Ok, although this bus is frigid because it's about 20 degrees out and the heater seems broken, I am going to try to get to sleep.  Yet again I only clocked four hours and thirty-four minutes of sleep last night and I have a ton of work to do today.

Cold mornings

Winter is a coming.  This morning before heading out I grabbed a scarf and put on a heavier coat.  Not a winter coat, but something heavier than my spring jacket.  It was in the 30s, which is cold for me.  I even put Evan's winter hat on.

I had a pretty exciting day back to work on Tuesday.  A few weeks ago I was asked to give the closing remarks at a Congressional Briefing.  I didn't really want to do it, but decided I would because who knows when I'd be asked again.  I was a bit nervous, but it went ok.  I feel like I could have done a better job and if ever asked again, I would, but it was my first time so I wasn't exactly clear on what my role was.  I didn't do a terrible job, but I could definitely have improved.  After, I took a picture in front of the podium, like a complete dork.  Oh well, sometimes you have to look ridiculous!

I had to get up extra early so I could look professional...meaning blow dry my hair and put on make-up.  After all that work I don't think I looked that professional anyway.  I could seriously use a haircut.  My hair was so drab, even after spending time drying it and stuff.  A haircut is just so expensive and we are so short on cash.  It would be nice to look decent again though, rather than frumpy.  Maybe one of these days.

My running is going slowly these days.  I went once at my parents' house, but that was it.  I really need to step my game up.  I usually get my runs in at work, it's the weekend runs that allude me.  I feel like I still have plenty of time, but in reality I don't.  I am going to try to be more vigilant about getting out there often and for longer distances.  Let's hope it works.

Not much to share today.  Hope you are having a great week!

No sleep, caffeine, less sleep, more caffeine....

That is a cycle and it sure is hard to beat.  This week has been especially hard on the sleep cycle.  It started on Sunday when I was up WAY too late getting ready for the week.  I "get ready" for the week so that I'm not up so late during the week packing lunches, etc.  It kind of defeats the purpose if I stay up late on Sunday and then never get a chance to catch up.  Then I'm tired all week, even when I don't have a bunch of things to do.

After being awake until almost midnight on Sunday (this is tragic, since I get up at 4:30am on Mondays) and getting woken up at least four times by Evan, I was TIRED Monday morning.  So I broke my caffeine-free habit and made regular coffee.  Big mistake.  Caffeine is a downhill spiral, in my opinion, especially when you are breastfeeding.  And you hardly ever drink caffeine.

He sleeps so well from 4am-8am...not sure what happens between 8pm and 4am.
Come Monday night, I was wide awake so stayed up late again.  Evan didn't sleep well either.  Tuesday morning?  Another cup of coffee.  And the cycle goes on.  Yup, except I didn't relate Evan not sleeping to the coffee until yesterday.  I'm not 100% sure it's the reason he's not sleeping, but I know it probably played a small role.  He's also teething and today his nose starting running - so those two things make it much harder for him to sleep too.

Sometimes Evan just has to go to jail...except he thinks it's fun,
so it's a good thing I don't use it as a punishment!
It is hard to get my work done if I'm exhausted though, and I have a lot of work these days so I need to be as awake as possible.  However, caffeine doesn't seem to be the best solution - since it really just makes me tired the rest of the week too.  I guess I'll try to catch up on sleep this weekend and then try and start the week out better.  Haha - not sure how possible that is, but it's worth a try.

And can I just tell you this embarrassing story that happened at work??  My boss was walking around introducing his former mentor who was visiting the DC area.  He comes into my office to introduce her and I stand up, shake her hand, and she says...wow, you've got a lot going on in here...while looking at my desk.  I thought she was commenting on how messy my desk was, until I followed her gaze and realized she was looking at my breast pump!  Yikes!  I usually just leave it on my desk because the cord is hanging onto its last string and if I move it, it may not work again.  Plus, no one ever really comes to our offices so it's rare to get a visitor.  I was so embarrassed though.  I couldn't tell if my boss was annoyed at me for having my pump sitting out for the entire world to see, but he didn't say anything.  I didn't really need him to though, I put it out of view two seconds after they left.  I don't think breastfeeding is anything to be ashamed of, but I definitely don't feel like it's super professional to have my pump and its parts sitting all over my desk.  We all wear underwear but I sure don't want to go into my co-worker's office and see a pair of her underwear on her desk!  Ok - so my pump isn't quite that bad, but I had to work really hard at keeping my face from going completely red and keeping my composure!

Any decaf coffee drinkers out there??

What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you this week??

Hot Day for a Run

Today sure was toasty. I am heading to the beach next week though so I am trying to get my runs in.  It sure would be nice to fit into my pre-pregnancy shorts and summer clothes. Even my husband asked why I way the same clothes all the time. When I told him my other clothes don't fit yet he suggested I go shopping, but I don't really want to spend the money if there's hope that my old clothes might fit. We shall see.

I usually don't like to run during lunch when it's so hot out. We don't have showers so that means I have to be sweaty all day long. During the winter it's no big deal because I don't sweat that badly, but now that it's 80+ degrees out and 70% humidity, not sweating isn't really an option. However, it is so hard to get my runs in after I get home from work that I feel like lunchtime is my only option. Sweaty mess and all.

Here, I am, all sweaty. Not sure what that thing is in the bottom left corner, I think it's my iPod case.

Today I put on my running clothes and realized that I forgot my socks. I just had my business socks on...which happened to have red peppers on them.

Yeah, I know, totally professional. So I had to run in those. I didn't think it would be too big a deal since I was only going 3 miles, but no, I got a blister.

And a lot of foot fuzz from the socks. Note to self, remember my running socks next time. They are important!  And no criticizing my feet, I realize they are not my sexiest attribute. And I also realize that my shoes are old as dirt. My hubs was going to buy me a new pair for my bday but he bought me golf clubs instead. So, I'm still running in the same shoes I ran the Marine Corps marathon in...in 2011. That's practically a crime but I keep spending our money on groceries and car seat bags and ridiculously expensive half marathons that I don't have money to buy new shoes.  And not only are they old but they are all stretched out from my fat pregnancy feet.

It's on my to do list.  Buy new running shoes.

I'm surprised I got my run in because work is so busy right now, but I'm glad I did. I was extra efficient in the afternoon and that was an added bonus.  I also realized that I grossly underestimate how long it will take me to do things. I swore I'd have my mailing for National HIV Test Day done today but even though I was very productive, there were too many things to do. I guess it will go out tomorrow instead. Hopefully the staff meeting doesn't eat up too much of my time.

Now I'm on the bus home. Fun times. I don't have Internet access, but I can upload this when I get home. Might as well do something productive on the 2 hour bus ride home, right?

And because I can't end a post without my adorable baby, here's a pic I snapped this morning of Evan sleeping. It's a bit dark because I didn't want to wake him and my iPad doesn't have a flash. It's adorable anyway, in my opinion.

Sick Little Boy

It has been a week of sickness in this house.  Last weekend Evan was just not himself.  He was super clingy, wouldn’t sleep in his crib, wouldn’t nap, and didn’t want to be put down.  This made life quite difficult – especially bedtime.  I had a very tired little boy.  And because he didn’t want to sleep in his crib at all and was waking up all night with a fever, I didn’t sleep much either.

What?  Me?  Cause problems?  Never!

By Monday night he seemed to be back to normal, minus a severely runny noise.  I got him to go down pretty easily and he was fine at my sister’s on Tuesday.  Then he started coughing – one of those wet, congested coughs.  And he coughed all night long – little coughs that wracked his tiny little body.  So I stayed home with him today, took him to the doctor, and am trying to nurse him back to health by giving him lots of steam baths.

The doctor checked him out and ruled out an ear infection (the fever + him pulling on his ears made me think maybe an ear infection or teething – neither it seems).  She gave him some meds to put in a nebulizer if he starts coughing at my sister’s house (however, he’s not going back there until Monday…hopefully he’s better by then).

DSC04661
What are you talking about?  I’m the cutest thing around town!

Sick babies cause lots of stress.  And not just stress because it’s horrible to have a sick baby, but the stress of trying to balance work and family.

Yes, the dreaded work-life balance.  A stressful balance here in the United States of America.

I work for a great organization that recognizes that family is very important.  That’s definitely made my life so much easier.  I can work from home a couple days a week, I can adjust my schedule as needed, I can take Evan on my work trips (although someone always comes with me to watch him).  However, it is still hard.  All night long Evan was coughing and coughing and coughing and I kept thinking: do I work or do I stay home?  Do I stay home and take Evan to the doctor?  Do I go to work and hope he’s ok?  Is he well enough to go to daycare?  Can I take him to the doctor on Friday (when I work from home)?  I already had Monday off and I worked from home on Wednesday – if I don’t go to work today then I will have only gone one day this week.  What’s the right choice in this situation?

DSC04662
It’s always better to stay home and play with me!

Yes – all this was running through my head at 2am.  I don’t want to be a slacker at work and I don’t want to be a mom that works when she should stay home with her sick baby.  That balance is SO HARD.  And honestly, I never really imagined these types of things when I was growing up.  I guess in my head I thought maybe I’d stay home with my kids, like my mom did.  Then I wouldn’t have had to make choices like this on a daily basis.  But I went to college and grad school and Peace Corps and I love my job and I love working.  And there is NO WAY we can afford for me to stay home and take care of the little one.

But on days like these – I kind of wish I could.  When there is no relief from the guilt – guilt for not going to work or guilt for sending my baby to daycare when he’s sick.  Either way, there is guilt.

DSC04665
Look at me – I can move around now!  I make life more challenging!

I guess I’ll just have to get used to that guilt because I have a feeling I’ll be struggling with these issues of work vs. family for a long time.  Unless I win the lottery.  Which means I should probably buy a ticket because although the lottery is pretty impossible to win – it’s even more impossible to win if you don’t have a ticket.

And another thought – why is it so much easier for me to take off work than for my husband???  It is so much harder for him to ask for off, so I usually end up taking the day off unless I’ve taken a bunch of time off already.

Such is life.  And no matter what – this little angel always comes first!

DSC04666
I’m a little angel and I like to smother you with kisses and hugs!
